ChatGPT Is Recommending Products to Shoppers Right Now, Which Seems Crazy But It's the Next Chapter

A brand can rank number one on Google and still be completely invisible to ChatGPT. Not low ranking, not buried on page two, actually invisible. The reason has nothing to do with content quality, and almost nobody has checked for it because nothing in a normal SEO workflow asks them to.

Here's the mechanism. ChatGPT's live search runs on Bing's index, not Google's. Independent 2026 studies put the overlap between ChatGPT's citations and Bing's top results at roughly 87%. If your page was never indexed on Bing, it has almost no path into a ChatGPT citation, no matter where it sits on Google. Meanwhile Meta's AI agent can now discover and buy products from Shopify stores without a customer ever leaving the app. The sale doesn't only happen on your storefront anymore, it happens inside whatever AI is deciding what to show someone.

Your Google dashboard was never measuring this

Google Search Console, Google rank tracking, most standard SEO dashboards, all of it measures a search engine that ChatGPT isn't actually querying when it needs current information. A strong Google ranking genuinely does predict visibility in Google's own AI Overviews, since those pull straight from Google's index. It predicts almost nothing about ChatGPT, which is running on an entirely different index built by an entirely different company.

Most teams have spent a decade optimizing for Google and never once checked whether they're even indexed on Bing. That sounds too basic to be the actual problem. It usually is exactly the problem.

Check the basics before touching anything else

Confirm three things. Is your site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools. Is your sitemap actually submitted there. Does your robots.txt allow Bing's crawler and OpenAI's own search bot through.

A site that's been chasing Google rankings for years can be sitting on a Bing indexing gap large enough to explain a real chunk of its AI invisibility, and no amount of better content will touch that particular problem. Indexing has to come first.

Indexing isn't the same as getting recommended

Once you know you're indexed, the next question is whether that indexing is actually converting into citations, because these are two different stages people constantly treat as one. Compare your ChatGPT citation rate on pages you know are well indexed in Bing against pages that either aren't indexed there or were only recently added. A meaningful gap between the two groups tells you indexing status is doing real work, and tells you exactly where to focus the next round of fixes.

Why this is the window, not just the warning

Being the brand an AI model defaults to recommending compounds over time, since these systems tend to keep citing what has already worked for them before. Most brands haven't checked any of this yet, which means the ones who fix it now aren't just catching up, they're getting first crack at becoming the default answer in their category.

Check your Bing indexing status today. It's the cheapest, fastest fix on this entire list, and it's the one thing standing between your brand and a customer who's already talking to an AI about exactly what you sell.
